Bruckner quoted in Seattle Times
Seattle-based digital imaging company BlackSky has won the backing of Europe’s largest satellite maker, Thales Alenia Space, and expects to open a satellite manufacturing facility in the Seattle area with 30 to 35 initial employees, company co-founder Jason Andrews said Friday.

Eric Schultz passes away
We were saddened to learn that alumnus Eric Schultz (MS 97) passed away. Schultz was a Lieutenant Colonel and pilot in the US Air Force and was flying a training mission when his plane crashed at the Nevada Test and Training Range, near Nellis Air Force Base.

Fujiwara Awarded de Karman Fellowship
Congratulations to Gustavo Eidji Camarinha Fujiwara, a PhD student in the William E. Boeing Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics who has been awarded the Josephine de Karman Fellowship. He was one of only eight students selected in a highly competitive process from a pool of about 400 applicants from universities nation-wide.

Kim receives Amelia Earhart Fellowship
Congratulations to doctoral study Helen Kim on receiving the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship for 2017-18. This fellowship was established to assist the future of women in aerospace and related sciences and engineering. It is awarded annually to only 35 women from a pool of applicants world-wide, and recognizes those who demonstrate an outstanding academic record.

Foight receives National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
Doctoral student Dillon Foight, who works with Professor Anshu Narang-Siddarth, is the recipient of a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Dillon, who was on the Dean’s List for 7 semesters, was also inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma, the Physics Honors Society, and received the College of Arts and Sciences Student Research of the Year Award.

Sierra’s is currently working with Professor Kristi Morgansen in the Nonlinear Dynamics and Control Laboratory on novel applications of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in GPS-denied environments.

Life on Mars?
Aeronautics & Astronautics alumna Ansley Barnard, BS ’12, is one of six volunteers living in an isolated dome on the slopes of Mauna Loa on Hawaii’s Big Island, where the geology mimics that of Mars. She’s participating in a NASA-funded Mars simulation mission, known as the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation project (HI-SEAS).

Robotics reboot
